We are looking for volunteer tutors, mentors and techs. Be part of an exciting and dynamic team helping students succeed in the CS program. This is a rewarding experience that can help you further develop you skills and be highlighted in your resume.
As a Tutor, Mentor, or Tech you will:
- Gain Communication & Critical Thinking skills
- Gain Leadership skills
- Gain Team Building skills

Commitment
Minimum commitment is 3 one hour sessions a week for one semester and a 3 hour training session
Flexible hours, will work around school schedule
*For Techs: It is difficult to estimate the amount of time that one will spend on a project, but a small project might take a couple of hours to complete and a difficult project could take weeks to complete.
What it means to be a Tutor
Tutors help students with their many CS courses that deal with Java programming, data structures, algorithms, computer systems, C programming, or object-oriented design. The CS Tutoring Center functions as a "study hall" environment, where students can come in study and obtain assistance from the Tutors, and students there are encouraged to work in peer groups to assist each other. It is a very fun and exciting environment, which as a tutor will definitely help polish your programming and critical thinking skills as well as helping your fellow students succeed in their classes.
Requirements for Tutor
- Ability to communicate well with others
- Ability to explain complex concepts
- Ability to work well with others and in groups
- Competent in the subject/topic being tutored (subject competency will be assessed)
- Major GPA 3.0

What it means to be a Mentor
Mentors help first time Computer Science (CS) students adjust to San José State University and the CS program by assisting them with time management and study skills as well as helping them find the appropriate resources on campus to help them succeed within the program. As a mentor you will be a guide to these first time CS students, and be able to learn more about resources on campus as well as meeting new people.
Requirements for Mentor
- Ability to communicate well with others
- Ability to work well with others and in groups
- General knowledge of SJSU campus resources
- Familiarity with the Computer Science program
- Must have completed at least one semester at SJSU
- SJSU CUM GPA 2.7

What it means to be a Tech
CS Volunteer Techs have the purpose of working on projects for and on behalf of the Computer Science Department. These projects can range from easy to difficult, and these projects can be done individually or in groups.
Requirements for Tech
- Eagerness to make a difference, learn more and meet new people!
